2025–26 IAABO Manual Updates
Several significant changes have been approved and integrated into the IAABO Manuals, including complete reorganization of content, updated terminology, clearer diagrams, and the integration of new NFHS rules and interpretations.
The Crew of Two (Co2) and Crew of Three (Co3) manuals have each been revised into 20-chapter documents in a logical order. The layout of the material by topic is consistent between both manuals. Referencing based on identifying each chapter, segment, item and sub-item (e.g. 12:7:B.2) has been implemented.

Mechanics Updates and Clarified Procedures
- Free Throw Administration – Lead (15:2:4): After the Lead bounces the ball to the free thrower, they will assume their position off the court and indicate the number of free throws to the scorer’s table, using their tableside hand. This signal was added to help prevent confusion with the table officials and potential correctable errors.
- Trail in Transition (4:7:B and C): A new diagram based on three imaginary “lanes” has been added to show how the Trail official should maintain effective positioning and open-looks while advancing into the frontcourt.
- Throw-In Spots (12:2): In alignment with new NFHS rules, throw-in spots are now determined based on whether the stoppage occurred inside or outside the three-point, arc in both the frontcourt and backcourt. New diagrams have been added for clarity.
- Backcourt Throw-Ins (12:7:B.2): Officials may now bounce the ball across the lane for a backcourt throw-in when there is no defensive pressure.

Switching on Fouls – Tableside Mechanics (Co3)
Two switches have been revised in the IAABO Manual to reflect updated switching procedures that were approved by the NFHS at the April meeting in Indianapolis. By updating these two changes, all switches are now completely consistent between the IAABO and NFHS manuals.

These updates continue IAABO’s commitment to aligning with NFHS, improving consistency across officiating crews, and providing clearer guidance for developing officials. Officials are encouraged to review the manual in detail and use the updated mechanics, terminology, and diagrams as they prepare for the upcoming season.
