End of the Season: Thriving in the Final Weeks
February and March mark a turning point in the basketball season. Everything changes.
Teams are fighting to qualify for the postseason. Others are battling for seeding. Every possession, every whistle, and every decision carry added weight. It’s also the end of a long grind—physically demanding, mentally taxing, and often played in unfamiliar postseason venues. Fatigue is real. Pressure is real. And how officials handle these final weeks matter more than ever.
Crunch Time: Where Mental Performance Matters Most
As the season winds down, success increasingly depends on mental performance. Based on insights from a recent presentation by Dr. Joel Fish, the stretch run of the season is when focus, preparation, and emotional control separate solid performances from exceptional ones.
Being selected for postseason games is a great opportunity, but it also brings heightened expectations. The key to thriving “down the stretch” is not doing more — it’s doing what already works, even better.
Narrow the Focus, Simplify the Game
The bigger the game, the narrower the focus should become.
Strong mental preparation means doubling down on your routine:
- Trust your pregame habits
- Stay disciplined during the game
- Reflect productively afterward
Avoid overthinking. Keep your mind clear. Recover quickly from mistakes and move on to the next play. Simplicity is your ally when intensity rises.
Trust Yourself in Any Environment
Postseason games often come with new environments and unfamiliar venues. The surroundings may change — but your approach should not.
Control what you can control:
- Positioning
- Awareness
- Mechanics
- Communication
Do the same things that got you selected. Don’t reinvent yourself in the postseason. Trust your preparation, trust your instincts, and trust your ability regardless of where the game is played.
Project Calm and Confidence
One of the most important skills officials can develop is emotional management.
It’s okay to feel nerves internally — that’s human. What matters is not letting those emotions show externally. Players, coaches, and fans read body language constantly. Project calm. Project confidence. As the saying goes: “Don’t let them see you sweat.”
Use whatever tools work for you:
- Positive self-talk
- Controlled breathing
- Mental resets
When emotions are controlled, they no longer control you. That freedom allows officials to be fully present and perform at their best.
Understanding Postseason Selection
Postseason selection is challenging and, by nature, subjective. State associations must balance many factors:
- Geographic distribution
- Crew composition
- Eligibility and requirements
- Observations and evaluations
No process is perfect, and subjectivity is unavoidable.
If selected, accept the opportunity with humility and gratitude. Embrace every assignment. Be yourself. Do exactly what earned you the selection.
If not selected, respect the decision. Support and encourage those who were chosen. Most importantly, take time to self-evaluate and grow from the experience.
Transitioning Into the Offseason
Basketball is a long season — physically and mentally. The offseason is essential for recovery and regeneration.
Give yourself permission to step away:
- Spend time with family and friends
- Do things outside of basketball
- Watch the game for enjoyment (if you can!)
At the same time, remember that it’s easier to stay in shape than to get back in shape. Maintain good habits:
- Exercise regularly
- Eat well
- Get proper rest
Stay mentally engaged by reviewing rules, reading case plays, and using tools like weekly RQ+ plays. Work some offseason games — but not too many. Continue developing skills. There are no shortcuts, especially when it comes to positioning and mechanics.
Final Thoughts
February brings fatigue, intensity, and greater significance — it’s crunch time.
Trust yourself. Prepare mentally. Don’t change your routine. Project calm and confidence. Whether in the postseason or transitioning into the offseason, stay humble, stay supportive, and take advantage of every opportunity to grow.
Have a great end of the season.
