While it may not be the most glamorous job, the NJSIAA’s Officials Appreciation Week has shown that referees are essential for the existence of high school sports.
That existence is being taken into jeopardy as data has shown the number of referees dwindling, especially ones that are first getting started. Research from the NFHS has found that nearly 80-percent of officials quit after their first two years on the job. No new officials mean there is no replacement for other referees when they retire. Officlals are quitting in record numbers, cite fan behavior as primary reason for retiring
About four weeks ago, we distributed an op-ed suggesting that inappropriate behavior by parents and other adult fans at high school sporting events was causing many officials to quit before they even reached two years on the job.
Although we received mostly positive support from this article, some people thought we went too far in telling parents to "act your age" and "stay in your own lane." On the contrary, perhaps we should have been more direct. Click here to read more.
