IAABO Play Book+
11-14 Double Foul
This video was developed by IAABO to show the case book in a visual format and help officials learn the rules by seeing them applied.

You, the viewer, can decide how to utilize the video to gain a better understanding of the rules(s) and concepts.

For individuals who want to understand the play situation, the clip contains a title page, case book page, and a "Key Concepts" page that outlines each play situation and the pertinent rules that apply.

Each page will stay on the screen for three seconds.  You can "pause" the video on any page to allow the necessary time to read the information.

If you wish to go directly to the video clip, simply move the cursor to the nine-second mark of the clip and watch the play.  Can you determine the correct ruling?

The clip will play a second time. This time, the clip will provide a “Play Analysis” and outline the correct ruling and key concepts that apply.

We hope that you enjoy this educational tool and that it enhances your understanding of the rules.

Trail Staying with Play (Co2)
(IAABO Manual pg. 29)
Generally, when the ball handler takes the ball into the Lead’s primary coverage area (PCA), the Trail should give up the ball and “wrap back” to the sideline and resume off-ball coverage in the lane area (IAABO manual, p. 28).

However, the Trail official needs to be “partner aware” before giving up the ball.  The Trail should “sweep the floor” before position-adjusting back toward the sideline.  In this situation, the Trail official should quickly look at the Lead official to ensure the Lead has taken over observing the ball handler/defender match-up.

There will be times, such as the situation depicted in this graphic, where the Lead may be observing a competitive “off-ball” match-up in the lane. In this case, when the Lead is officiating a competitive match-up off-ball in the low post and the ball enters their PCA, the Trail should “stay with the ball” momentarily until the Lead has clearly accepted ball coverage.

The Crew of Two system requires a lot of eye contact and teamwork to ensure we have adequate coverage.  On occasion, this will require officials to look outside their PCA and into their secondary coverage area (SCA).
