IAABO Play Book+
VPB 6.4.1C Jump Ball to Start the Game
(This clip does not contain audio)
This video was developed by IAABO to show common plays in a visual format and help officials learn the rules by seeing them applied.

You, the viewer, can decide how to utilize the video to gain a better understanding of the rules and concepts.

For individuals who want to understand the play situation, the clip contains a title page, casebook page, and a "Key Concepts" page that outlines each play situation and the pertinent rules that apply.

Each of these pages will stay on the screen for 3 seconds.  The viewer can "pause" the video on any of these pages to allow the necessary time to read the information.

If the viewer wishes to go directly to the video clip, simply move the cursor to the nine-second mark of the clip and watch the play.  Can you determine the correct ruling?

The clip will play a second time.  This time, the clip will provide a “Play Analysis” and outline the correct ruling and key concepts that apply.

We hope that you will enjoy this educational tool, and it enhances your understanding of the rules.

To see more plays like this, log onto the “Members Area” on the IAABO website at https://www.iaabo.org. You will have access to the entire Video Playbook database.

Line Coverage above Free Throw Line Extended (Co2)
(22/23 IAABO Manual pg. 45 - 21/22 Manual pg. 68  Diagram)
With the increase in motion offense and pressure defense, it is necessary for the Trail to cover the farther sideline more frequently.

When the ball is above the free throw line extended opposite from the Trail official the Trail should position-adjust and “work the arc” to get an open view to properly cover the play.  This coverage should reduce ball watching by the Lead official and provide better coverage while adhering to the PCA concept.  The Lead official will need to remain disciplined and remain focused on “off-ball” coverage within their PCA in lane area.

If the ball is batted out of bounds above the free throw line extended, the Trail is responsible for making the ruling.  If possession of the ball remains in the frontcourt, the Trail would move across the court to administer the throw-in as depicted by the diagram above.
