CB 4.37.2.a Rebounding Contact
(This clip does not contain audio)
This video was developed by IAABO to show common plays in a visual format and help officials learn the rules by seeing them applied.

You, the viewer, can decide how to utilize the video to gain a better understanding of the rules(s) and concepts.

For individuals who want to understand the play situation, the clip contains a title page, casebook page, and a "Key Concepts" page that outlines each play situation and the pertinent rules that apply.

Each of these pages will stay on the screen for 3 seconds.  The viewer can "pause" the video on any of these pages to allow the necessary time to read the information.

If the viewer wishes to go directly to the video clip, simply move your cursor to the 9-second mark of the clip and watch the play.  Can you determine the correct ruling?

The clip will play a second time.  This time, the clip will provide a “Play Analysis” and outline the correct ruling and key concepts that apply.

We hope you will enjoy this educational tool, and it enhances your understanding of the rules.

To see more plays like this, log onto the “Members Area” on the IAABO website at https://www.iaabo.org  and you will have access to the entire Video Playbook database.

Rotation Initiated Not Completed (Co3)
(IAABO Manual pg. 181, section 8.5, pg. 186 Diagram)
The rotation is not complete until the Lead passes beyond the far lane line extended. A rotation does not have to be completed if, in the Lead’s judgment, better coverage necessitates returning to the original strong side.

If the Lead has initiated a rotation and before the Lead has completed the rotation the ball reverses back to the Lead’s side of the basketline, there is a quick try or a drive to the basket, the Lead shall “back out” and not move to the C position.  If a try is attempted while the Lead is in the lane, the Lead should return to B position side of the lane and get as deep and wide as possible to observe rebound action.

IAABO Constitution Committee – Proposed Amendments
The proposed amendments below to the IAABO Constitution have been approved by the Constitution Committee and the Executive Committee. Pursuant to the notice provisions of Article XI of the Constitution, these amendments will be presented to the International Assembly for adoption at the Spring Meeting in Ocean City, Maryland, on Sunday, April 10, 2022.

Art. IX – Executive Committee
Sec. 2. Qualifications
Presently reads: In addition to the officers, twelve (12) members of the Association shall be elected to the Executive Committee, subject to the requirements set forth in Section 1 of this Article as follows: (1) One (1) member shall be elected from each of the ten (10) geographical regions set forth below; (2) Two ‘At Large Members’ shall be elected as follows:  One (1) At Large Member shall be elected at the 2018 International Assembly meeting – designated ‘At Large A’; and One (1) At Large Member shall be elected at the 2019 International Assembly meeting – designated ‘At Large B’. NOTE: An ‘At Large Member’ means a member who does not reside within any of the ten (10) Geographical Regions. Any member of the Executive Committee not in attendance at two consecutive meetings of the Executive Committee without cause shall be replaced by election at the next meeting of the International Assembly.
The geographic regions are as follows:
1. State of New York
2. Commonwealth of Massachusetts
3. State of New Jersey
4. Commonwealths of Pennsylvania and Virginia
5. State of Colorado
6. States of New Hampshire and Vermont
7. State of Maryland (except Montgomery County)
8. State of Connecticut
9. All Provinces and Territories of Canada
10. State of Maine

Proposed amendment: In addition to the officers, twelve (12) members of the Association shall be elected to the Executive Committee, subject to the requirements set forth in Section 1 of this Article as follows: (1) One (1) member from each of the ten (10) geographical regions set forth below shall be elected; (2) Two ‘At Large Members’ who do not reside within any of the ten (10) geographic regions shall be elected. Any member of the Executive Committee not in attendance at two consecutive meetings of the Executive Committee without cause shall be replaced by election at the next meeting of the International Assembly.
The geographic regions are as follows:
1. State of New York
2. Commonwealth of Massachusetts
3. State of New Jersey
4. Commonwealths of Pennsylvania and Virginia
5. State of Colorado
6. States of New Hampshire and Vermont
7. State of Maryland (except Montgomery County)
8. State of Connecticut
9. All Provinces and Territories of Canada
10. State of Maine

Rationale: Removes references to the ‘At Large A and B’ Executive Committee representative positions as well as references to 2018 and 2019. These references were used as guidance when the Association transitioned to the new two At Large Executive Committee representative positions. As the two current At Large Executive Committee representatives are in place and in the Executive Committee election cycle, these references are no longer necessary.

Art. X – Committees
Sec. 1 – Standing Committees

Presently reads: The following shall be the standing committees of the Association:
                        1. Audit and Budget
                        2. Board Relations & Policy
                        3. Constitution
                        4. Life Membership
                        5. Membership Development
                        6. Rules Examination
                        7. Officials Education & Development
                        8. Women’s Coordinating

Proposed amendment: The following shall be the standing committees of the Association:
                        1. Budget & Finance
                        2. Board Relations & Policy
                        3. Constitution
                        4. Life Membership
                        5. Membership Development
                        6. Rules Examination
                        7. Officials Education & Development
                        8. Women’s Coordinating

Rationale: One of the stated purposes of the Audit & Budget Committee in the Board Relations & Policy Manual is the preparation of a proposed budget in consultation with the Executive Director. The committee has never had any audit responsibilities as that term is used in an accounting context. This amendment deletes the term ‘Audit’ from the committee’s name and replaces it with ‘Finance’.

IAABO Good Citizen
Eric Erickson, an IAABO Independent member from Northwest Ohio is recognized as an IAABO Good Citizen.

He is licensed in four sports.  Eric has been a member of the Masonic Fraternity in Masonry since 1988.  He has helped rescue animals in need of help and has donated to the Humane Society in NW Ohio.  He has purchased several meals for strangers in restaurants or in need throughout the year as in paying it forward. He finds this most gratifying and enjoyable, along with helping those on corners seeking a donation.  The two that stand out the most, were two separate occasions during the hot summer months that two young men had their dog(s) with them.

Erik always has a case of water and an Ice Chest with Hydration/H2O - Gatorade and financial donations for those in need.  He has assisted in 4 fundraisers; donates to the Cherry Street Mission in Toledo OH annually; donates blood at least once a year.  He also has an industrial snow blower and assists his neighbors with their snow.

Paying it forward one act of kindness at a time builds lasting friendships for life.
Calling All Good IAABO Citizens
So many of us impact our communities and our world for the better.  IAABO would like to highlight many of the good deeds our officials have done throughout the year. We want to emphasize our belief in being good corporate and community citizens in the areas where we live and work.  So, whether it be a random act of kindness or an organized volunteer effort, no good deed is too big or too small!  Trust us, we’ll be humble so that our officials can be proud.  Send your email to IAABO @ info@iaabo.org  and tell us about a good deed you did this year.

Some examples include:
  • Rescued a puppy
  • Bought lunch for a stranger
  • Organized a fundraiser
  • Volunteered at a homeless shelter
  • Donated blood
  • Shoveled a neighbor’s driveway
  • Helped a friend in need

Officially Human; Behind the Stripes LLC (OH) was founded by Brenda Hilton as a grassroots effort to "humanize" sport officials in all sports at all levels. Brenda has spent close to 20 years working with sport officials and coordinators at the DI level and grown to appreciate them for all they do for our youth and young adults. OH is currently working with 12 high school associations (with more on the horizon) across the country to survey officials at that level, gathering information to take back constituents and participating states in hopes of building a nationwide campaign. To date, 16,000+ officials have shared thoughts and ideas on how to address the issue.

OH currently has sportsmanship banners available for purchase to be displayed at venues; they can be customized with the venue logo.
