Why the Hope College Women's Basketball Team
Started 9 Players against Kalamazoo College
Hope College women’s basketball coach Brian Morehouse called it the best technical foul he has ever had in his 25 years of coaching the Flying Dutch.
The Flying Dutch defeated Kalamazoo College 101-37 in their regular-season finale at DeVos Fieldhouse in Holland. It wasn’t so much what happened during the game that his nine seniors will remember most about the victory, however. It was what happened just as it tipped off that made it so unforgettable. We're Scrambling to Fill those Slots
Hudson Valley has Shortage of Basketball Referees
"This is the first time in 34 years I won't be out there blowing a whistle and being part of high school basketball….Family concerns, personal reasons, health concerns, the unknown of how the schools would be handling the safety factors and the protocols," says referee Eric Dronzak.
In a normal year, some 150 men and women officiate in Westchester and Putnam County. Now about 35 are working multiple games per day, sometimes seven days a week. "It puts an extra added burden on the referees, so we're scrambling to fill those slots. We want to make sure we have the right referees in the right positions," says Phil McGovern.
In most cases, less experienced officials are being moved up, working in two-man crews for both varsity and JV games Click here to read more.

COVID-19 could not stop us,’ says Karn Dhillon of the B.C. Basketball Officials Association. ‘I think, in some ways, it made our group stronger’
The COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t kept Karn Dhillon and fellow basketball referees from doing their part to try to get cancer to foul out.
Despite there being no games at the high school, college or university levels that they could use to promote their cause, the B.C. Basketball Officials Association (BCBOA) decided to still run its annual February Pink Whistle/Call A Foul on Cancer campaign. According to its B.C. Cancer Foundation donation page, it had raised $19,912 by midday Wednesday to be put towards cancer awareness and research.

Notice of Proposed Amendment - IAABO Constitution
The proposed amendment below to the IAABO Constitution has been approved by both the Constitution Committee and the Executive Committee. Pursuant to the notice provisions of Article XI of the Constitution this amendment will be presented to the International Assembly for adoption at the Spring Meeting in April, 2021.

Art. VIII - Officers
Sec. 7 – Nomination

Presently reads: At least ninety (90) days before each annual meeting, the President shall appoint a Nominating Committee of five (5) members of the International Assembly, at least one of whom shall be a Past President and cause to have published in the next issue of Sportorials the names of the committee members. At the next annual meeting these members shall submit a list of nominees for the elective offices. Additional nominations may be made from the floor by any accredited member of the International Assembly. Any member holding an elected office must vacate (resign) his/her present office before accepting another elected office.

Proposed amendment: At least ninety (90) days before each annual meeting, the President shall appoint a Nominating Committee composed of five (5) delegates to the International Assembly, at least one of whom shall be a Past President, and cause the Nominating Committee roster to be published in the next issue of one of the Association’s publications. At the annual meeting, the Nominating Committee shall report a list of nominees for the elective offices. Additional nominations may be made from the floor by any accredited delegate to the International Assembly. Any member holding an elected office must vacate or otherwise resign his/her present office before accepting another elected office.

Rationale:
     • To provide for the publication and notice of the Nominating Committee members in recognized publications (i.e.; Inside the Lines) of the Association, in addition to Sportorials.
     • To clean up the existing language.

Delay/Spread Offense Coverage
At times, the offense will spread out their players and attempt to run some time off the clock, which often occurs late in the game or near the end of a period.  When this occurs, it can be challenging for officials to get proper angles to cover the play during perimeter ball movement.

The Lead should be positioned wide toward the sideline, moving up and down the sideline as necessary. The Trail is wide toward the sideline and nearer the division line, moving onto the court and even into the backcourt when necessary. As ball penetrates toward Lead, Trail closes down toward the end line and should wrap back to the initial starting position at the sideline near the 28’ foot mark.

COVID-19 fears have kept many officials away

Unionleader.com (New Hampshire) CONTRACTING COVID-19 is always in the back of Mike Frost’s mind. But Frost, a 49-year-old Merrimack resident, has officiated high school hockey for 21 years and he’s not stopping now. “We’re taking a chance as officials by doing the games but we’ve also all volunteered to do that,” Frost said. “But anything you do, anywhere you go, you can catch it anywhere.” When Steve Burrows walked into the Spaulding High gym to referee his first basketball game this season, he noticed two chairs set up in the corner. “That was our changing room,” Burrows said. “That’s when it hit me this was going to be a different year. ”Like players and coaches, this high school basketball and hockey season has been filled with challenges, changes and protocols for officials. Frost, president of the National Ice Hockey Officials Association’s New Hampshire chapter, said referees now have their own pregame preparation. Click here to read more.

HBCUs are well-represented in NBA games,
holding a referee’s whistle
By Marc J. Spears
The NBA’s lone player from a historically Black college and university (HBCU) is the Portland Trail Blazers’ Robert Covington. However, there is a lot of HBCU representation on the NBA floor every night – it’s among the referees.
The NBA currently has 73 referees for the 2020-21 season, according to the National Basketball Referees Association. Nine of them are African Americans who graduated from HBCUs: Bennie Adams, Courtney Kirkland and CJ Washington from Southern University, Tony Brown from Clark Atlanta, Derrick Collins from Xavier of Louisiana, Sean Corbin from Coppin State, Karl Lane from Philander Smith College, Matt Myers from Hampton University and Tom Washington from Norfolk State. Referees Marc Davis attended Howard and Eric Lewis attended Bethune-Cookman. Click here

Philly referees have dominated NBA
officiating for decades. Here’s why.

Throughout the NBA's 75-year history, one tradition that has endured is the quantity and quality of referees from the Philadelphia area.

by Frank Fitzpatrick, Inquirer.com
NBA players and coaches occasionally murmured about the league’s unusually large collection of Philadelphia-area referees, but none as loudly as Red Auerbach, the longtime Boston Celtics coach and executive. “Every league meeting, he’d rant and rave about all the refs from Philly,” said Ed Rush, once the NBA’s supervisor of officials. “We’d say, ‘Red, some of these guys are from Trenton or Western Pennsylvania.’ And he’d say, ‘That doesn’t matter. They went through Philadelphia.’ He was probably the loudest voice in the league and he was always on his soapbox about that. ”That discontent exploded one night following a Celtics loss, when Auerbach, upset by Jake O’Donnell’s officiating, tried to kick down the door to Boston Garden’s referee room. Click here to view

Officially Human; Behind the Stripes LLC (OH) was founded by Brenda Hilton as a grassroots effort to "humanize" sport officials in all sports at all levels. Brenda has spent close to 20 years working with sport officials and coordinators at the DI level and grown to appreciate them for all they do for our youth and young adults. OH is currently working with 12 high school associations (with more on the horizon) across the country to survey officials at that level, gathering information to take back constituents and participating states in hopes of building a nationwide campaign. To date, 16,000+ officials have shared thoughts and ideas on how to address the issue.
OH currently has sportsmanship banners available for purchase to be displayed at venues; they can be customized with the venue logo.
