High School Basketball will
Look Different this Year
By Rene Cloukey
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) - High School basketball practices have started and hopefully games will begin next week. The games will look very different this year with everyone in the gym wearing masks, no spectators and basketball officials looking to stay socially distanced and a big change to start the game.
Harry Orser:” There will be no jump ball we will start the game with a coin toss at the pregame conference. Whoever wins the toss gets first possession. On free throws the officials will stay probably way back to the end of the lane and bounce the ball to the shooter. Anytime we make a throw in we are going to be at least six feet away.  Click here to view
Colorado's Mask requirement complicates High School
Basketball Season for some Referees
Jeff Letofsky, The Pueblo Chieftain
Colorado high school basketball officials will be required to wear masks when the state's winter season begins later this month.
That goes for all boys and girls games at the varsity, junior varsity and freshmen levels.
The requirement is causing plenty of trepidation for officials and even led to some officials opting out for the 2021 season, while others are opting out because of COVID-19 concerns for their families.
Colorado's high school basketball season is scheduled to begin the week of Jan. 25 and conclude with the state championship games March 20-21. The 14-game season will include a shortened postseason as only 24 teams will qualify for the playoffs in Class 1A-3A and 32 in classes 4A and 5A.
Not only will officials be required to wear masks or face coverings during games, so will players.
Prep sports: Refs, umps also affected
by winter sports delay
By Ryan Pritt, Gazette-Mail Preps
In response to questions about the now-viral video of a New Year’s Eve party in a ballroom at The Greenbrier Resort, Gov. Jim Justice pointed to the employment of around 1,500 as a case for keeping the resort up and running as normally as possible.
The day before that video was shot, Justice — the owner of The Greenbrier — announced that the start of all winter high school sports in West Virginia would be pushed back from Jan. 11 to March 1 as sports in all five border states either prepared to start this week or continued on after starting earlier.
The perceived hypocrisy of the video and the ban on prep sports has drawn the ire of coaches, parents, administrators, and athletes among others.

TSSAA cuts pay for referees during
2020-2021 basketball season
by: Jordan Brown
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — High school basketball referees in Tennessee will be seeing pay cuts this season. The TSSAA worked with basketball supervisors to make the change after Governor Lee signed an executive order limiting crowd capacity at sporting events.
Because of the smaller crowds at games, schools are finding themselves with less money to pay referees. The original idea was to scale back and have just two refs instead of three, but TSSAA executive director Bernard Childress tells us it was actually the idea of basketball supervisors to keep all the refs and cut their pay instead.  Click here to continue.
Parents, Coaches pushing Game Officials off the Field
By Chris Schoonover For the Savannah Morning News
Ideally, game officials would worry about what is happening on the field: holding penalties, offside calls and determining whether a basketball play was a block or charge.
However, that is not the referees' reality. They are being called out by coaches on the sidelines, and fans are relentless while judging calls from over 100 feet away.
The average age of an official in Georgia is 57 years old, and the average goes up every year with younger people leaving the profession. Click here to continue.

Officially Human; Behind the Stripes LLC (OH) was founded by Brenda Hilton as a grassroots effort to "humanize" sport officials in all sports at all levels. Brenda has spent close to 20 years working with sport officials and coordinators at the DI level and grown to appreciate them for all they do for our youth and young adults. OH is currently working with 12 high school associations (with more on the horizon) across the country to survey officials at that level, gathering information to take back constituents and participating states in hopes of building a nationwide campaign. To date, 16,000+ officials have shared thoughts and ideas on how to address the issue.
OH currently has sportsmanship banners available for purchase to be displayed at venues; they can be customized with the venue logo.
