Perspective from a High School Basketball Referee
By Matt Daniels/The News-Gazette
Leroy Schluter remembers attending a local high school basketball game in 1998, shortly after he moved from St. Louis back to his east central Illinois roots. The 1985 Armstrong High School graduate saw some of the same officials who used to work his high school games. “I talked to the coaches afterwards,” Schluter said, “and the problem that exists today existed back then: there was a shortage of officials. ”So Schluter joined the ranks. And hasn’t looked back, either, in the subsequent 22 years. Among the more veteran and respected high school basketball referees in the area, Schluter has worked two IHSA girls’ basketball state tournaments, most recently helping officiate the Class 1A state championship game in 2019.

Wisconsin Study: High School Sports
Have not Spread the Coronavirus
By the Associated Press
MADISON, Wis. — A new study from the University of Wisconsin-Madison suggests that the state’s high school sports have not caused an increase in COVID-19 infections among athletes.
The UW School of Medicine and Public Health released the study Thursday. Researchers led by Dr. Andrew Watson surveyed 207 schools that restarted fall sports in September, representing more than 30,000 athletes, more than 16,000 practices and more than 4,000 games.
The survey found 271 athletes contracted the virus overall compared with 2,318 Wisconsin children aged 14-17 over the month of September. No sports were found to have a higher incidence rate of COVID-19 overall than 14-17 year-olds. None of the cases among the athletes resulted in hospitalization or death.
Of the 209 athletes who knew where they contracted the virus, only one case was attributed to participation in sports.

Officially Human; Behind the Stripes LLC (OH) was founded by Brenda Hilton as a grassroots effort to "humanize" sport officials in all sports at all levels. Brenda has spent close to 20 years working with sport officials and coordinators at the DI level and grown to appreciate them for all they do for our youth and young adults. OH is currently working with 12 high school associations (with more on the horizon) across the country to survey officials at that level, gathering information to take back constituents and participating states in hopes of building a nationwide campaign. To date, 16,000+ officials have shared thoughts and ideas on how to address the issue.
OH currently has sportsmanship banners available for purchase to be displayed at venues; they can be customized with the venue logo.
